Love Etc.

Rated: NR.

Filmmaker Jill Andresevic follows the relationships of five New York couples of varying ages over the course of one year in order to explore the many forms that true love takes. The youngest couple, Gabriel and Danielle, is a pair of starry-eyed high school kids who find their devotion tested as graduation looms ever closer. Meanwhile, divorced father Ethan dives into the dating pool and gay single Scott realizes his dreams of parenthood when he becomes the father of two infant twins. As elderly couple Albert and Marion sails into their golden years while celebrating 50 years of blissful matrimony, we discover that not all unions are quite as content by spending time with Chitra and Mahendra, an engaged couple who discover just how rough the waters can get once the honeymoon is over and the reality of married life starts to sink in. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The Names of Love

Rated: R.

Baya Benmahmoud (Sara Forestier), a young, extroverted liberal, lives by the old hippie slogan: “Make love, not war” to convert right-wing men to her left-wing political causes by sleeping with them. She seduces many and so far has received exceptional results – until she meets Arthur Martin (Jacques Gamblin), a Jewish middle aged, middle-of-the road scientist. Bound by common tragic family histories (the Algerian War and Holocaust under Vichy), the duo improbably fall in love. Amid the bubbly amour, humorous lasciviousness and moments of sheer madness, filmmaker Michel Leclerc injects satirical riffs on such hot-button sociopolitical issues as Arab-Jewish relations, anti-Semitism, immigration, and racial and cultural identity.

I’m Dangerous With Love

Rated: NR.

Dimitri Mugianis is an artist and musician who in the 1980s and ’90s earned a cult following with his experimental rock band Mr. Unique and the Leisure Class. Mugianis was also a drug addict who spent nearly 20 years dependent on heroin and alcohol. However, Mugianis became aware of Ibogaine, a hallucinogenic drug derived from natural roots that has been used for centuries by shamans in West Africa. With Ibogaine, Mugianis was able to kick drugs and alcohol without painful withdrawal and has been clean ever since. Mugianis became an outspoken advocate for the use of Ibogaine in drug detox, despite the fact it’s a Schedule 1 controlled substance in the United States, and has organized underground Ibogaine therapy sessions in the United States and Canada. However, after one such Ibogaine detox nearly led to the death of a patient, Mugianis set out to learn more about its traditional use in West Africa, going so far as to travel to Gabon and undergo traditional rituals with the drug in the company of shamans. Filmmaker Michel Negroponte followed Mugianis on his voyage to Africa, and his documentary I’m Dangerous With Love chronicles his experiences and how he believes Ibogaine can change the way we treat drug addiction in North America. I’m Dangerous With Love was an official selection at the 2010 Hot Docs Documentary Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
